The works of Olena Pchilka, a woman of many talents, an active, interesting
personality, have not been properly appreciated or regarded by Ukrainian researchers.
During Soviet times, due to her noble descent and other factors associated with it, she
was long perceived only as Lesia Ukrainka’s mother and was in the shadow of her
daughter. In the meantime, bringing up her talented daughter and other children, she
managed to find time for self-fulfillment. She is known as a writer, a poet, a
playwright, an art-critic, a journalist, a literary critic, a translator, a publisher, a
folklorist, and eventually as a first female academic in Ukraine. Therefore, to
commemorate her 170-th anniversary, it is worth contributing to the research of her
works, especially the prose ones, since, according to many researchers, her literary
talent was the most vividly manifested in her prose writings.
Olena Pchilka as a literary figure tried her hand in practically all kinds of
literary genres. In the current study the attention is focused on the writer’s short prose
and the linguistic and stylistic devices which lay in the basis of her works and have
influence on their perception. It is worth noting that the language of Olena Pchilka’s
works appear to be an extremely interesting phenomenon from this perspective.
