The article
examines the intellectualism of the prose of Olena Pchilka as stylistic feature of her
individual artistic style. Non-artistic elements in literary text such as terminology,
professional lexicon, discussions on scientific topics, characters’ evaluation of social
change are carried out. The author examines how such elements subordinated to the
overall storyline and composition expand semantics of the text. Further the author
stresses how cognitive, informative and philosophical aspects help to enhance the
literary text and to create a conversation between the reader and the author. Characters’
statements, reflections, direct and indirect Pchilka’s intervention in the text are analyzed.
The prose is intellectualized by urban characters, namely, doctors and scholars, those, in
particular, who are able to philosophize. The author states that an implication of
autobiographical facts to text canvas helped to emphasize the problem of national
identity and language in an educated society. The author comes to the conclusion that in
her works Pchilka glorify an intelligent, self-driven, highly motivated human being that
is useful in society. Intellectualism is, obviously, not writer’s end in itself but provides
the novelty on the thematic and problematic levels of the work.
