The derivational and part-ofspeech concepts of Jerzy Kuryłowicz and modern Ukrainian functional grammarians: the comparative aspect

Abstract

This article investigates the importance and the role of the theory of Jerzy Kuryłowicz in international linguistics and studies the pecularities of the interpretation of syntactical and lexical derivation outlined in the concept of the Polish scholar as well as the levels and the subcategories of transposition in modern Ukrainian linguistics. The well-known theory of Jerzy Kuryłowicz is prominent for a unique algorithm for describing linguistic phenomena and linguistic units of different kinds, namely syntactical and lexical derivation and classification of part-of-speech word categories. The ideas suggested by the Polish researcher now underlie the studies of the modern Ukrainian literary language that are being conducted with the application of the functional and categorical aspect. The three levels of transposition determined by the aforementioned trends are as follows: the syntactic level, the morphological level and the semantic level. The fourcomponent system of parts of speech developed by Jerzy Kuryłowicz has been modified in Ukrainian linguistics to a hierarchically structured five-component system. The viewpoint of the Polish scholar on which Ukrainian linguists agree is the denial of the part-of-speech meaning of prepositions, conjunctions, particles and exclamations.
