About Ignacy Krasicki’s essay The Criticism and its translation in the periodical “Ukrainsky Vestnik”

The paper presents the essay The Criticism by Ignacy Krasicki (born in 1735 in Dubiecko, died in 1801 in Berlin) from the prose series The Notes, and its Russian translation, published in the Kharkiv periodical “Ukrainsky Vestnik” in 1819. The translator of the essay was Petro Hułak-Artemowski (born in 1790 in Horodysce, died in 1865 in Kharkiv), an Ukrainian poet and scholar, promoter of the Polish literature, the first Polish language and literature teacher at Kharkiv University. The Notes were published for the first time in the sixth volume of the collection of Krasicki’s works in 1803 (the editor of the publication was Franciszek Ksawery Dmochowski). Krasicki and Dmochowski were among the leading representatives of the Enlightenment in Poland.
The paper consists of three parts. The first part presents the place of the essay The Criticism in the series The Notes (thematic classification of the Polish researchers Klara Leszczyńska-Skowron and Kamila Żukowska) and its connections with the works by the Polish authors of the Enlightenment (articles in the periodical “Monitor”, Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski’s activities etc.). The second part is devoted to the translation of the essay The Criticism (translation strategies, translation of the quote from The Epistle to the Pisones) and its place in the structure of the periodical “Ukrainsky Vestnik” (articles about Polish language, other translations from Polish, for example of the Dmochowski’s work about Krasicki). The third part contains an evaluation of the translation of the essay The Criticism and presents Krasicki’s opinions on the art of translating (on the basis of the essay About Translating Books). In the paper there were used research methods of comparative literature and translation studies. It sheds light on the Ukrainian-Polish literary contacts in the first half of the 19th century and the East-European reception of Ignacy Krasicki’s literary output.
