Travelogues: on the border between media and literature

Abstract

The article attempts to analyze the current issues of journalism and literary studies, namely, it is proposed to consider travel studies (travel literature) as a universal genre on the border between media and literature. The purpose of the study is to determine the main regularities of formation and development, to highlight the topics and issues of the Ukrainian travelogue as a metagenre that is developing in parallel in the field of media, in the form of a media text, and in literature, as a literary phenomenon. The methodological basis of the research is the descriptive method, with the help of which the peculiarities of the development of the travelogue genre at the current stage are traced. This method made it possible to distinguish the general and specific features of the Ukrainian travelogue, and allowed to determine the trends and main regularities of the development of this genre in national writing. The chosen methodology made it possible to outline genre-creating factors, originality, as well as common features of the studied texts.

Results.The article defines the specifics and peculiarities of the functioning of the travelogue on the border of the indicated spheres of humanitarianism, the unevenness of the development of the genre and the formation of its modification varieties, the features of the media travelogue. Features of the coexistence of fictional and non-fictional elements in travel literature are considered. Emphasis is placed on the relevance of the discussion on genre definition. Ukrainian texts in which the journey appears are analyzed. Attention is focused on who is the narrator of the text - journalist-reporter or writer-observer, because the definition of the genre (report or literary travelogue) depends on this. It is emphasized that travel essays can indeed have a psychoanalytical component, which is no less important and interesting for the reader an element of knowledge of a diverse and interesting world. It is concluded that the travelogue is a meta-genre that needs research in different areas.
